1 Tarland - variety of waymarked circular walks through attractive open countryside to local features, including ancient stone circle, hill fort and views over the Howe of Cromar.

2 Glen Tanar - range of waymarked circular walks through ancient pinewood within a National Nature Reserve, and access point for longer hill walks to Ballater, Mount Keen and Glen Esk.

3 Burn O’Vat - variety of very attractive short walks to the spectacular Burn O’Vat and Loch Kinord, and longer walks within the birch and pinewood scenery of a National Nature Reserve.

4 Cambus O’May - four circular trails from the Forestry Commission car park, including a route for all abilities, through highland pinewood, and links to longer walks nearby. Separate parking for Suspension Bridge on a bend in the River Dee with easy walks along the river.

5 Ballater - 60 mile waymarked network of attractive circular walks and cycle routes of varying length and difficulty along side the River Dee, through oak and pine woods to local hills and glens, all giving spectacular views of Deeside.

6 Glen Muick - range of walks through impressive open countryside from the Visitor Centre, an 8 mile circuit of Loch Muick, and access point for longer hill walks to several Munros including Lochnagar.

7 Keiloch - over 9 mile network of very attractive circular walks and cycle routes around the pinewoods, parkland and river scenery of Invercauld Estate, and main access point for Ben Avon and Beinn A Bhuird.

8 Braemar - 68 mile waymarked network of attractive circular walks and cycle routes of varying length and difficulty amongst spectacular river, birchwood and mountain scenery, all giving open views of Upper Deeside.

9 Linn of Dee - variety of attractive walks on Mar Lodge Estate amongst spectacular river, pinewood and mountain scenery, including short walks and picnic areas beside the river, and access point to Cairngorm hills and glens including Ben Macdui and the Lairig Ghru pass to Speyside.

10 Head of Glen Esk - Easy walking past Invermark castle to the shores of Loch Lee. Longer riverside walk to Queens Well and Balnamoon’s Cave. Through route over the Mounth Road to Glen Tanar via Mount Keen, Scotland’s most easterly Munro.

11 Clova - 5 mile circuit climbing to Loch Brandy, dramatically set in a high mountain corrie. 10 miles through route along the hilltops to Loch Lee and Glen Esk.

12 Head of Glen Doll - varied walks, including short walks by the White Water and up the Fee Water to spectacular Corrie Fee. Access to hillwalks, including several Munros, Jock’s Road to Braemar and the Capel Mounth to Glen Muick.

13 Glenprosen Village - A number of paths lead from this tranquil glen over rolling heather clad hills towards Glen Clova, Glenisla and Backwater Reservoir, including the 6 mile long Minister’s Path to Milton of Clova.

14 Glenisla - From the Forestry Commission Car Park at grid reference NO224607 (near Kirkton of Glenisla) there are various forest walks and cross-country ski trails. There are through routes to Glen Prosen and the nearby Cateran Trail links to Blairgowrie.

15 Kirriemuir - the variety of easy walks in and around the town include Kinnordy Loch RSPB reserve, Caddam Woods, and Kirriemuir Hill, with views towards the Angus Glens.

16 Brechin - a variety of easy walks around the cathedral city, through woods and farmland, alongside the river South Esk, and following ancient drove roads leading to Trinity market.
